Person Description

Photograph - 2015.7.d Photograph of Commodore Garry Sloss. Commodore PDSC 1978 - 1980. “Gary Sloss joined the P.D.S.C. in 1962. Sailed one of the first Chine 14’s – Roll Cock Pit type. Came back for more to Teal type 14’ – open cockpit. Forward hand for a few seasons. Went in the scheme of building – 6 “Maneka” type 14’s. Sailed 2 – 3 seasons. Crewed again with brother Rodney, until accident. Hitting Cement Spit. Now in 4th season with myself – crewing.. Served on House and Social Committees before becoming involved in management. (Not sure)…Chaired Social Committee before becoming Flag Officer. Took over from Trevor Stranger after ½ season. In the period of Rear and Vice Commodore Gary chaired House and Social Committees and managed the bar. He was very energetic as House Committee Chairman, and brought a lot of good ideas into our Social Programme, which has rubbed off onto other Social Committees since. As Bar Manager the Club was very lucky to have his ability and know how when he ran the bar at the last 14’ and Signet Australian Titles at our Club … without a storeroom and entry to the Cold Room from the rear. I consider it a great effort to have made a profit of $2000 over a period of 8 days! It was really hectic under those conditions. As Commodore he was also a member of the House Committee making sure it all happened. Gary and Judy attended all social and business functions our club was invited to, during his Office, and was held in very high regard by his fellow Flag Officers around the river. In his final 3 months of Office he was involved in the planning of our last major extensions, which involved a new canteen for the ladies, a new toilet block for the men, extensions to the men’s change rooms, and extending the ladies change rooms and toilets. As the Immediate Past Commodore, he organised and supervised, with Bob Alsopp, the building of these extensions. Through his efforts, work and a lot of time, Gary was responsible for updating our facilities for the cost of approximately $15,000 - $16,000. Had the same job been done by a contractor it would have cost in the vicinity of $25,000. This was truly an incredible effort. Gary is now president of the 14’ Dinghy Council. His experience in this position is helping NOT ONLY the 14’ Dinghies, BUT the JAVELIN Section, and also the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, in organising the 14’ & Javelin Carnivals, which will be held this Christmas/New Year. Finally Gary has attended most Socials and Busy Bees over his 20 years as a Member. For these reasons I believe this man has given special service to the P.D.S.C. Therefore in my opinion is worthy of “Life Membership”. “
