Description

Seven Regency style side chairs. The chairs are made of walnut with walnut burl veneer on the back rest. The style is a modified Greek "Klismos" chair, called Classical Revival in North America. The front legs are delicately turned and the back legs are in the true "sabre" curve. The slip seats are upholstered in a gold and white striped rayon material. The slip covers are hled to the chair frame by a wooden peg, which fits into a corresponding hole in the seat frame. They are in good condition except for the seat material which is soiled. Circa 1840. These chairs belonged to the James Armour family which lived in the "Mill House", built by John Graham Haggart in 1837. The house is situated on Mill street, on the edge of Stewart Park.
