Description

This chair is a Regency stle arm chair, which belongs to the set of seven chairs (967.1). The chair is made of walnut, with walnut veneer on the back rest. The chair is made in a modified Greek "Klismost" style, which is called Classical Revival in North America. The front legs are delicately turned and the back legs are in the true "sabre" curve. The slip seats are upholstered in a gold and white striped rayon fabric and are held to the chair frame by a wooden peg which fits into a corresponding hole in the seat framte. The chair is in good condition except for the seat material which is soiled. This chair has scrolled arms, wchih sets it apart from the rest of the set. Cica. 1840 These chairs belonged to the James Armour family which lived in the "Mill House", built by John Graham Haggart Sr. in 1837. The house is situated on Mill Street, on the edge of Stewart Park.
