Description

This large ironstone-type ware was decorated using an underglaze blue transfer design. The design shows a landscape with a tower and bridge. On the bottom of the tureen an underglaze blue marking reads: DELFT, Rd. No. 22633, SPODE, COPELAND, ENGLAND. The handles have broken off and the base has a long crack extending down one side. The lid has a design in underlgaze blue transfer that depicts a landscpate scente with the bridge, towner and three pigeions feeding in the foreground. The lid is surrounded by a blue flowered border. The edge is moulded in a gadroom pattern similar to the silver of the period. It has an indentation to allow for a ladle handle. There is a large chip that has broken off one corner. Another corner has been broken off and reparied. The finial is an elaborate, stylilized flower. On the inside of the lide there is an inscription which reads: COPELAND, SPODE TOWER, ENGLAND in a blude oval. The china ladle has no markings and it has a different pattern from the tureen. The ladle is flow blue with a flower design. The ladle probably does not belong with the tureen. Circa: 1890. The British registry mark was discontinued at this time and a registry number was used instead.
