Description

This is a large figurine of a girl in an 18th Century Italian peasant costume. She is carrying a cricket cage in her left hand and is pointing to it with her right. There is a lot of gilt work on her costume. This gilt work consists of the stripes on her neckerchief, the scrollwork on the pointed bodice, the gold flowers on the looped up overskirt and the stipes on her ankle length underskirt. She has a pink rose at the bodice and pink ribbons on one of her hips. She is wearing rust coloured shoes with blue buckles. Her hat is a blue pancake-shaped cap that is decorated with pink ribbons. She has a pink rose in her hair. The cap looks like the sort of cap seen in illustrations of 18th century Italian peasant girls. She has black hair and blue eyes, with ringlets hanging down to her shoulders. She is standing on an elaborate gold and white scrolled base, that has five scrolled feet. This figure greatly resembles the porcelain dolls of the mid 19th century. The head has been broken off at one time and been re-glued. It is the companion piece to 967.6. there are no identifying marks Circa 1850
