This picture is a portrait of the Hon. John Graham Haggart Jr., the son of John Graham Haggart. He was born Nov. 14, 1836 and he died in March 1919. John Graham Haggart was Mayor of Perth in 1866, 1869, and 1873. In 1872 he was elected as the Conservative representative for Lanark County to the House of Commons. He held his office until his death, a span of 42 years. In 1888, he was called to the Privy Council and was appointed Post Master General. He remained in this post until Jan 11, 1892 when he became Minister of Railways and Canals. He held this office until 1896.
This portrait is done is pastels, mainly blues. It is housed in an elaborate plaster/gesso frame which is gold leafed. The gesso/plaster has been chipped in the two bottom corners, which has exposed the wire framework. The picture is protected by glass.
This portrait was bought at the Haggart sale by the Matheson family, and it was in turn bought at the Matheson family sale by Mrs. J.P. MacClaren and it was stored in an attic. The picture then passed to Norman H. Bell, who loaned it to the Conservative Club in Ottawa. Later, it was returned to Perth to Mrs. Peggy Armour Cavanagh, who lived in the Mill House, the original Haggart Home.Dimensions
