This is an early Victorian Hall Chair made of hand carved oak. It is carved in a style which reflects the Victorian love of the Baronial Celtic mystique. The chair is small and low to the ground. It has a hard plank seat and back. The chair is not upholstered. The short, sqaut front legs are turned and the rear legs have the Regency curve. A shiled shape is carved into the middle of the back. It was originally meant to hold the families' coat of arms if they had one. The vack is carved with an outline of curves and scrolls. This style is called the "Victorian Gothic Style" and it involved everything from furniture to whole houses. The apron below the front of the seat is carved in reveresed Gothic "ogee" arches.
This particular chair belonged to the Matheson family and it was used in the hall of the house when the Mathesons lived here. Circa. 1850-1860Dimensions
