Description

Table, Square, Victorian, Parlour: This large Victorian parlour table is made of Walnut. It is supposed that the table was made by prisoners in the Kingston penitentiary. The sides of the top are curved as are the legs, in a form of revised "'Victorian Rococo" style, which was popular in the 1850's. It belonged to Andrew Lees, one of Ottawa's first lawyers. The top needs refinishing. The curved legs are carved with Acanthus leaves on the knees, and the bottoms of the legs look shaped as if for socket castors, yet there is no evidence that it did indeed have castors. In any case, large brass castors on this piece would look very awkward. Circa: 1850
