Description

This early Canadian Pianoforte is in the North American version of the French "Empire" or "Napoleonic" style, which was very popular in the 1830s to 1840s. It is made of mahogany and the horizontal keyboard section is supported by a pedestal base of a pyramid form. Some of the veneer is missing. All of the ivory is intact. The piano has only one pedal. The panel above the keyboard is made of rosewood and birdseye maple veneer. The top raises completely, but hte rear hinge is inoperable. The makes label is in the form of a glass plaque inlaid into the panel above the keyboard. It is backed with gold leaf and painted on the underside in black ink (eglomise). The legend reads "Mead & brothers, Pianoforte Makers, Montreal." This piece probably dates from the late 1830s or up to 1840.
