Description

Regency-style D-end dining table, made in Montreal in 1823. Belonged to the Matheson family and secured from the great granddaughter of Hon. Roderick Matheson, Mrs Boyle of Ottawa by the Perth branch of the I.O.D.E. It is made of walnut with pine as a secondary wood and consists of three parts, a center drop leaf table, and two end sections. Each end can be pegged into each drop leaf when extended. The table has 14 legs when fully extended and using the drop leaf support legs. The legs are turned. There is no evidence that casters were ever used on the legs despite the fact that it seems to be a low table. The D-ends are stained since at one time they were stored in a fruit cellar. At present the top surface is scratched and ringed. The table was finished with boiled linseed oil and turpentine in the 1970's.
