Description

A fine Sheraton-styled bow front chest of drawers of mahogany. It has four drawers with lion head pulls in brass. The lions are holding the rings in their mouths. The outline of the original pulls van be discerned underneath these and it appears that they were animal heads as well. The top of the chest is decorated with inlay banding in a diamond design and the drawer fronts are decorated with fine veneer banding of an olive toned wood. There are cuts in the back of the chest ro allow for four ebonized buttons to be set in the four corners of each drawer. The edge of the top is veneered in a thick grooved mahogany vbanding which is broken at the top left edge. The mahogany veneer is split on the left side/end and looks like a large scratch. The feet are heavy, and turned in a reverse pyramid shape. The backboard is of pine, split and bevelled at the sides. This chest was owned by Colonel Josias Taylor, who was a Peninsular War Veteran. He was born on the island of Jersey in 1782 and he came to Perth in 1815. He died in 1849. He was the first postmaster of Perth. Circa: 1790
