969.5.1a-bbDescription
These two large cups and saucers (969.5.1a, 969.5.1b, 969.5.1aa, 969.5.1bb) have a white ground with scalloped rims, that are decorated with three faded bluish-green striped banded at five points by gilt acanthus leaves on both the cups and the saucers.
The exteriors of the cups have a pleasant band of gilt leaves and scrolls, which make the cup look very dainty. The gold was probably added via the honey process.
The edge designs are faded due to washing because the old gilding processes were not as stable as the ones used today. However, the exterior deisgn on the cups is still fresh.
This style of cups was used in mid nineteenth century England for breakfast tea.
Circa 1850.
