Description

This footed fruit compote is one piece of a set of original Matheson china. It has a high pedestal base, the foot of which is pierced with teardrop holes. The dish is oval in shape and has a scrolled edge which is richly redecorated in gold leaf. It is decorated with a green, red and gold peacock in the centre of the dish with gold butterflies on branches around the top edge. It has two pierced, scrolled handles elaborately gilded, and four petal feet at the bottom. There are no identifying marks on this piece or on any other of this set, only the lot number of 3100. It is most probably English and is curiously heavy, probably Rockingham or Coalport China. the family legend that it is Nantgraw china is without foundation. Circa 1835.
