970.3.7Description
This large platter is part of the 53 piece set of china originally owned by the Matheson family. It is a rather heavy white china decorated in a rich reddish-gold leaf, the red tone being very apparent on this piece. The platter has a peacock sitting in a flowering branch, all enamelled in red, green and gold in the centre. The edges are scalloped and gold leafed in scrolls with an inner scrolled band. The border is decorated with butterflies in red and gold sitting on flowering sprays. This piece is in perfect condition and has no identifying mark other than the 3100 painted in red on the underside. It may be Rockingham or Coalport since it is so heavy, but the legend that it is the Welsh Nantgrew is without foundation. Circa 1835.Dimensions
