Description

Dishes, Sweetmeat: This heart-shaped or triangular sweetmeat dish is part of the 53 piece set of china originally owned by the Matheson family. It is rather heavy white china decorated in rich gold leaf. The plates have an elaborately pierced openwork lacy border with a gilded scrolled border. The handle at the widest end is designed in a gold scroll and leaf form and red and gold butterflies on gold flowering branches are scattered around the perimeter of the plates. A red, green and gold bird sitting on a red, green and gold enamelled flowering branch is the centre design. Both pieces have a very fine hairline crack on the outer edge and the number 3100 painted in red on the underside of the dish. Circa 1835. # 970.3.10a has a fairly recent chip out of the underside along the edge.
