Description

These plates are from the 53 piece Matheson family china. They are of a rather heavy white china decorated in rich gold leaf. the edges of each plate are scalloped and decorated with gold scrolls. THe borders are decorated with gold and red butterflies sitting on gold flowering branches. The central design in all of these plates is of a red, green and gold enamelled bird sitting in a red, green, and gold enamelled flowering branch with berries. Each bird is slightly different, yet similar to make a cohesive whole. Plate #970.3.12 c has a chip out of the rim and plate # 970.3.12 d has a slight hair-line crack in the middle underneath the bird design. All the others are in perfect condition and all bear the painted red number 3100 on the underside. Circa 1835. This set could be Rockingham or Coalport, although no identifying marks can be found. # 970.3.12 f has a chip on the underside of the edge (recent) with a thin hairline crack extending into the centre.
