Preface - The principal excuse for the pages which follow is the continuing interest in the Wilson-Lyon Duel evident from the numerous accounts which have appeared during the past ninety years. None is complete and most repeat obvious errors of fact frequently augemented by imagination; features which have dictated both the substance and the form of the present narrative. It attempts to present chronologically all the creditable evidence available and primarily in the form of the recorded words of the participants themselves or of contemporary observers, supplemented by seemingly authentic secondary sources. For the most part the material quoted is either obscurely in print or hitherto unpublished. Some of it may appear only marginally relevant but is included to dispel misconceptions, to illuminate the attendant circumstances or simply to impart some flavour of the period.
