Steel Engraving: "Town of Perth Scotland"
Black and White. Framed steel Engraving taken from a watercolour of Town of Perth Scotland, see photo below the black and white photo.
Note: We do not have the watercolour shown below. It is just to show the colours.
Picture depicts people walking and sitting on a hill. Women in long dress and men in top hats. There is a river in the background with a Town on the left and a hill on the right.
Old Description: Framed and under glass a drawing/etching, pen and ink of the Town of Perth, Scotland.
There are several indicators that this Perth is not located in Upper Canada, but rather in Perth Scotland. Underneath etching, inscription: Drawn on the spot by J. Clark, Published by Smith & Elder 1824. At the center of the border at the bottom is a coat of arms; 2 eagles symmetrical, with what appears to be an Irish wolfhound bearing the cross of St. Andrew. The scene altogether is too sophisticated and well established to be Perth Upper Canada. Ladies dress very elegant, empire waists ruffly edges, ostrich feather hats. The men are in top hats morning coats with velvet collars and cuffs high ascots, Steamships appear on what looks like a well traversed river.
This plate is part of a series by John Clark titled 'Views in Scotland'. The plates were advertised for sale in 'The Examiner' on 2 May 1824, priced at 10s. 6d. each. Generally, two Plates from the series were published each month in 1824–35.Made/Created
