Description

Table, Work/Sewing, Victorian: This mahogany table has two drop leaves on either side with pull out support brackets. It has a square pedestal support base which rests on a plinth with four scroll-shaped feet with metal castors. It has two drawers with key hole escuthcheons. It is of solid mahogany on top with veneer on the base and feet. the veneer on the scrolled feet is lifting and is in bad condition. It is in the classical revival style popular in the late 1830's and early 1840's. The lower drawer is separated into four compartments for sewing supplies. This table was bought at auction in 1970 by Mrs. Inderwick because it is very similar to a table once owned by the Mathesons. the top swivels on the base to provide greater flexibility in use as it is moved from place to place on its castors. Circa 1840.
