RS23 - Resource Book 23:
Forward: When - Don Crawford began writing "Stories that Missed the Headlines" for The Perth Courier in August 1978, he was already well known to our readers for his branch 244 Legion Scene, which he had been writing for many years and continued to do so, "Stories That Missed the Headlines" was probably one of the most religiously read columns the Courier has ever published, and when Don died of cancer on October 7, 2000, part of this paper died with him.
This book pays tribute to a man who had an imagination that entertained thousands of readers for almost twenty-five years. In our newsroom hangs a beautifully framed colour photo of Don, a throwback to his earlier days as a reporter. Sitting at a restaurant table, he is wearing a wide-brimmed hat with a press card sticking out of the ribbon, a long-sleeved white shirt, arm garter holding up the sleeves, and a bow tie. He has a cigar in his hand, several more butts are in an ashtray, and four draft beer glasses (two empty) sitting in front of him. He is reading a 1950's-ear Perth Courier. On the wall beside him is an old framed photo of Foster Street.
