Description

This fine early Canadian piano is made of faded mahogany, with a birds eye maple sounding baord and a rosewood panel above the keyboard. The top lifts up completely, and the vertical stringing is hidden by a panel of pleated gold rayon in place of the original silk. One key has lost its ivory veneer and the sounding board is badly cracked. It has two folding candle brackets on either side of the keyboard, the left one has been repaired with popsicle sticks and new screws, but the right one is completely original. The keyboard is supported by two elaborately carved, curved "corbels" ornamented with rosettes and acanthus leaves. It has two pedals and the lock is missing at the front. The back panels have been removed and are pine framework covered in black broadcloth. The date "August, 1837" has been burned into the back of the piece. the original maker's label still exists above the keyboard. It is of brown paper, elaborately scrolled in gold penwork and bears the legend: "New Patent, Frs. Milligan Pianoforte Makers, Couillard St., Upper Town Quebec". It spans 5 complete octaves.
