Description

This elaborate silver plated ice water jug on stand was a presentation piece in 1883. It was presented to Mary Jane Caldwell on the occasion of her marriage to Dr. William Grant of Perth, who lived in the Daniel Mc Martin House (1883-1919). The inscription reads, "Presented to Miss Caldwell by the Ladies of the Congretional Church, Lanark." She had been an organist at this church. She was the eldest daughter of Boyd Caldwell and his wife, Dinah Waugh. This piece was loaned by the two grandaughters, Miss Desiree Girouard & K. Esme Girouard, daughters of Katherine Mary Grant (daughter of Mary Jane Caldwell and Dr. WM. Grant) and Lt. Col. Rene Girouard. The last patent date is Oct. 29th 1878, Wilcox Silverplate. It is in three pieces, the stand, the jug, and a removable tray in the base plus handle and lid. The jug has a white porcelain liner for insulation and it swivels on the stand. It is elaborately engraved and has bands of repousse flower borders. The removable round tray has a butterfly-shaped handle and is engraved with a cherub in a raspberry or strawberry patch. The only thing missing is the silver goblet which would have stood on the separate round base attached to the larger base. Made in Meriden Conneticut.
