Description

This modified Prie Dieu chair has a walnut frame and is upholstered in very fine needlepoint in wool and silk. The needlepoint panels were made first by a Mrs. Drysdale of Perth who sent them to Ridpath's of Toronto who made up the chair entire, in the late 19th century. It was handed down to Mrs. John Stewart of Perth, wife of the Hon. John Stewart who in turn, left it as a legacy to Miss Drummond, who returned it to Drummond's Grandmother. Needlepoint is done in shades of whit, green, red and rose on an olive green background. Some of the shading is done in silk as a contrast to the wool and gives a great depth to the apperance. The chair back is very high and in a "T" shape, flanked by walnut pillars. The seat is very low to the ground and the legs are elaborate cabriole shapes, similar to a "Chippendale" design but much later. Circa 1880
