Canvas, Beadwork/Grospoint, Panel for Fireplace Bench:
This beaded, woolworked panel was intended for use in covering a fire place bench. It was bought by Mrs. Stevenson at the Matheson House sale in 1930. It consists of a flower design in beadwork, surrounded by a geometric border, all very elaborate with shading done in various shades of grey and white beads, with silvery gunmetal beads giving highlighting. The wool stitching is done in shades of mustard and a pale turquoise blue border with black grospoint. This work was presumably done by one of the Matheson ladies. Wool work like this was highly popular in the Victorian period from the 1850's till the end of the period. This particular one seems to be of the style of the 1850's. It is sitting on top of the piano in the 1890s Parlour/Library/Family Room.
Aida cloth even weave.
