Description

The portion of this book which deals with soap boiling was the subject of a small monograph privately circulated some time ago. This dealt with efforts, which were ultimately successful, to devise a new method of controlling the operations which should not be dependent on the skill of the indivdual soap boiler. Careful examination was made of the composition of the soap mixtures at the different stages of the process which throw a new light on the mechanism of the operations, and the data obtained indicated certain rules by which the mixture could be adjusted in composition by the addition of the materials required in definite amounts. Such a procedure eliminates most of the irregularities due to humor error and increases the general efficiency of the process without in any way interfering with the quality of the main product soap. The book will be of service to the practical men who take a part in controlling the ordineary chemical operations of the factory, and as it assumes nothing but the most elementary knowledge it should be equally useful to the beginner.
