Description

This fragment of Chinese wallpaper and its border were saved in 1931 when presumably it was removed from the walls of the drawing room. It has been framed recently with a gold frame and a soft green mat. It depicts blue poppies, balsam and nasturtiums, all handblocked in multi colours. The border at the bottom depicts blue asters or cornflowers twinning through a grey ribbon. A beige card was pasted on the wallpaper and it reads: 1837-1931, a section of wallpaper and border imported from China and hung in the drawing room of the Senator R. Matheson house, Perth Ontario in 1837 - removed in 1931. Original colours of design brilliant, ground white. On the wall outside the Drawing Room.
