Description

- Wedding Dress, c.1850. - This dress was used as a wedding gown. It has a three quarter high bodice that is pointed and also has a round neckline. The dress's structure is called a "Bell Silhouette". - The material used was silk of a lavender colour which is embroidered with a purple and white floral pattern. The lining of the dress is cotton and is stained a golden colour . Inside the sleeves there is a light blue satin lining that measures 8 inches on the outside seam and 3 inches in the inside seam. - The sleeves are pagoda sleeves which is a sleeve in the sape of a large triangle or bell. They are trimmed with a fringe like trim of purple's and white lace. - The bodice has a heart pelerine that starts at the shoulders and descends to the waist where it turns into close-gaging at the point. The pelerine is rimmed wih a fringe trimming of the colours purple and white. - On each shoulder there are two epaulettes of the same satin and fringe trimming. Funk and Wagnalls dictionary defines spaulettes as a fringed shoulder ornament. - On the bodice at the back the waist is close gaged and is trimmed with torsage of the same satin. (The waist at the back is no pointed). - The back of the dress is plain with 15 hooks and eyes to attach the dress. - The skirt is not trimmed, it is hemmed under an inch.
