Description

- c.1850 Winter Carriage Dress. - The mantle or jacket has lost its hood which has been replaced by fur trimming. The cape hangs below the waist and merges into large handing sleeves with rounded corners. Because it is worn closed and not have a hood this mantle is then called a "pelisse-mantle" 1839. The skirt is just clear of the floor when worn. A dress such as this would have been worn chiefly in the carriage during the winter. - The material used for the dress is black satin. The satin used for the skirt is much more silker than that of the satin used for the jacket. The lining of the jacket is also black satin. The lining of the skirt is a white material with black stripes. It is stained and golden colour. - The mantle fastens with 11 hooks and eyes which are hidden inside the jacket. The outside of the facing is decorated with six aglaie's or circular shape and made up of silk cord and jet. A wooden button on each agrafe acts as a hook for the hanging loop on each agrafe. - The adrafe's fasten once across the bosom, once across the ribcage and again at the stomach. - The back of the jacket: The sleeves come up and attach at the waist as well to the sides or the cape. And so this creates a draped effect. This is decorated with two agrafes of silk cord and (chenille) trimming. - Fur trimmings or (chenille) are found on the collar, sleeves, around the rutine? run of the mantle and also on the agrafes. - Chenille is defined as a soft fluffy cord of cotton, wool, etc, which is often used for trimmings and curtains, etc. - The skirt of the dress is styled and made of black satin. The skirt is quilted with geometric figures. The flonnce at the front of the skirt is quilted in a zig-zag pattern. The other flonnces are not quilted until the centre of the skirt and from there down to the edge they are quilted in a criss-cross design.
