Octagonal shaped ashtray is of white glazed earthenware. There is a narrow line of gold paint outlining the rim of the lip, which has become worn away in a few places. The lip itself is 1.7 cm wide and each corner is indented to a depth of 0.5 cm, and a width of 1 cm to from a resting place for a cigarette. This indentation extends 2 cm into the bowl of the ashtray. The bowl of the ashtray echoes the octagonal shape of the rim and measures 9 x 9 cm. It contains a transfer design consisting of a pale-blue sky, fading to pale yellow and then to a pink, indicating a sunset. In the centre of the design is a 2-sided view of a white rectangular, 2 storey building with 12 windows visible. There is a cupola and 3 chimney stacks on the roof. 6 trees in full, green leaf stand on a lawn of green grass in front of the building. In the centre foreground of the design is a brown road curbing past the building and another section of green grass to the left of the road and following the curve of the road. Next to this strip of grass, and on the left, is a section of blue water. Underneath the design are 2 brushstrokes of brown paint with the legend: "Perth Carpet Factory, Perth, Ont." printed on in small capital letters. The reverse side of the ashtray is plain glazed white. The base is square, measuring 7 x 7 cm and is 0.5 cm deep. It contains a manufacturer's stamp that is light brown in colour and consists of a circle 2 cm in diameter with the words "Made in Germany" printed around the inside edge.
