· Educated locally and at Upper Canada College and Trinity College.
· Joined Merchant’s Bank in Perth in 1869 and remained with the firm for forty-six years, serving branches in Cardinal, St. Thomas, Windsor, Ingersoll, Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and Montreal before returning to Perth in the 1890s; became manager of the Perth branch (northeast corner of Drummond and Foster Streets) in 1907; retired in 1916.
· Captain in the Queen’s Own Rifles (Toronto), later the Governor General’s Foot Guards (Ottawa).
· Prominent member and sometime warden of St. James’ Anglican Church and an energetic worker for the Ottawa diocese.
· An avid gardener and member of the Perth Horticultural Society.
· Brought the game of golf to Perth; one of seven founders of the Links O’Tay Golf and Country Club, in 1892, which was established on the Matheson farm across the Tay River in Bathurst Township.
· “How eloquent his life was in tender mercy and kindness; a man of upright life and absolutely stainless.”
