Sawyer, Portrait Painter. Back Cover: Photographic and art STUDIO, W. Sawyer, 193 ST. PETER STREET CORNER OF CRAIG MONTREAL This is to introduce to the public some of the basic definitions of the 19th century photographic phenomenon. The importance of Sawyer's own photographic activity rests largely with his use of the calotype, a form of early photography, which is rarely documented in Canada. Sawyer, by combining the activities of portrait painting and photograph, demonstrates in his work the absorption of the photographic perception into the artist's perception in the 19th century. Consideration of his use of photography in the context of the 19th century suggest that it was used positively and as would have been expected. Contents are: Notes on the description of works.
