Description

Tilt top table/fire screen, turned walnut pedestal base with three legs and walnut frame. Carved leaves appear in the corners of the frame as in picture frames of the period. Needlework is protected by glass. Gros point background in green, design in white crystal beads. There is a dark crimson background with three lighter shades in diamond patterns to form the centre. It has a border in orange, brown, and yellow with beading in a Greek Key design. The needle-work was done by Eliza Sache, daughter of Colonel C.H. Sache, a half pay officer who came to Perth in 1815. Charles Henry Sache, 1st Lieutenant of the 76th regiment of foot went on half pay on the 25th of Sept. 1817. He was a local registrar, a Notary Public, an Anglican Churchwarden and brother-in-law of Dr. George Hume Reade. Miss Sache moved to Arnprior, where she died in 1879. This screen was in the museum when it was located over the old Library building. c. 1860 A paper describing the screen is attached to the tilt-top table mechanism, and it probably dates from the old museum.
