This fine example of an early sampler is in a wide walnut frame with the original glass and wooden backing with two brass hanging rings. It is worked in multi-coloured wools on an ecru linen ground. The design consists of a large elegant house with a fanlight door and pilasters, with a white picket fence in pink and white wool. This house is reminiscent of the Daniel McMartin house on Gore Street, but not exact. It is flanked by a pair of birds with a white bird sitting directly on the roof of the house. The rest of the design consists of flowers, trees, baskets of flowers and a rooster at the gateway to the house, the whole picture is surrounded by a sinuous border of stylized strawberry vines in natural colours. Across the bottom is the name of the embroiderer: "Elizabeth McLaren, - Drummond 1858". This sampler is believed to have hung ober the dining room mantlepiece of the Glossop House at the corner of Beckwith and Foster streets in Perth, the most charming stone house in the town. Elizabeth McLaren latter became Mrs. Glossop.Made/Created
