This pewter plate measures 9'2''' in diamter. It is dated early 1800s (prior to 1840). the principal feature by which to date is the border. the border is "plain-rimmed" or a "smooth-facedbrim" about 1/4" or 1/2" in width with a single reed at the outer edge of the back. there are no other markings or monograms (owner's initials) seen. This design was common to the period. the plate is approximately 1/2" deep. The inner diameter is approximately 6 1/2". there is not a raised hoss in the centre. this was a simple design known as a flat plateau surronding a shallow basin. It is difficult to determine whether this is an actual English or American design as the style was common to both. Touchmarks are the best guide. 3 are present but are illegible through wear. There are scratch marks present. The three touchmarks are:
1) what appears to be an ampersan & there are no names or initals on either side of this mark. this could have been the makers mark (1/4"wx1/2"h).
2)What is legible is part of an oval wit hthe letter N at the edge. could this have been the down mark? (7/8").
3)The top edge of what appears to be a decorative border. The letters are no longer legible this could be a quality mark. This plate is of good or fine quality, hard but not heavy and therefore better quality, (1 1/2" W x 1/2"H).
It would have been "cast" which was the more traditional mthod. and consistent with the period. the finish or pattina is difficult to assess as the item has greatly oxidized (has black scale). It does not have a brown tinge which would have represented storing in a smoky environment there are cutting marks around the rim indicating use.Dimensions
