Description

Stoneware teapot stands 21cm in height with a lid of about 5.8cm in diameter. It is badly cracked and reglued. 993.5.1a: the ogee shaped handle has a thumb rest and on the outside of the curve there is a mulberry coloured transfer print border with scalloped edges. This diaper pattern is repeater on the prow shaped rim of the teapot. At the narrow part of the rim is a floral motif. Down from the mouth is a protuberance or more specifically, an undulating rounded edge in a bladed shape. This protuberance has a mulberry coloured transfer print border with scalloped edges. This border contains 4 cartouche feamed designs with an architectural scene in the center. Alternating with these are four oval shaped designs with a floral boquet in their centre. The bown is oval shaped, 16.4cm high, with identical mulberry coloured transfer scenes on both sides. The scene depicts two peasant women in a cemetary standing before a mausoleum. At the side of the mausoleum is the cross of Cleves. There is also a tombstone which is a verticle rectangualr shape with a captain and a ball on top. There is also a tombstone with a half sphere on the top with a floral finial. Th woman are looking across to the city with a meadow spereating them from the buildings. The teapot stands on four clawed feet which are unglazed at the bottom. 993.5.1b: The lid is oval in shape with a rosetta knob. It is cracked and re-glued. It has mulberry coloured transfer print border with scalloped edges. The border contains two oval shaped designs with a floral boquet in their center, alternating with two cartouche framed designs with an architectural scene in their centre. There is also a steam hole.
