"I.
'Twas evening, and the cry
Of the News Carrier's call
Rang shrill through the market,
O'er the mansion, o'er the hall;
"Her's yer News," yes, it rose
O'er the din and the strife
Of a city that is moving
With a purpose in her life.
II.
Her's yer News," and I glanc'd
Far adown the gloom
To catch what he said-
"Have you herd uv the doom?-
"Take the News, it will tell you
Uv our own gallant Maine-
Its blow'd all ter atoms
By the hirelin's uv Spain."
III.
O, mother! mother! listen
What the News' carriers say!
They've fough and awful battle,
"Santiago," don't they say?
Cervera has surrend'rd
To Sampson on the sea;
All Cuba has been captur'd
By Wheeler, Schley and Lee!
IV.
"Her's yer News," cried the carrier,
And they covered every street-
"Have you red it, mister, red it?
Dewey's smash'd the Spanish fleet!
He's knocked the forts ter pieces,
He's silenced every gun!
En' Gen'ral Aguinaldo-
He's got 'im on the run!"
V.
"Take the News-a hoopin' battle-
The paper's got it full-
The Boers-ain't yer red it?-
Have dun up Johnnie Bull!"
"Every red about it, mister,-
Chickermarger's wond'rous Park?
All cover'd o'er with monuments--
Orter red about that Park."
VI.
"Every State within the Union
Whose solders fit and bled,
Iz makin'' contrerbutions
Ter commemerate the ded.
Our valleys, mister's, cheker'd
With transits in their flights,
Ter bring yoh in o' mornings
En' take yer home o' nights."
VII.
"We've got them 'lectric batt'ries-
That lights in every place,
En' our tellephonic sistem,
Haz annihilated space.
The Rapid Transt's glidin'
Away ter Sherman Hights,
En' the inline hez divested
The eagles of their rights.
(verso)
VIII.
"En, mister, right on Lookout-
Kan't tell yer 'bout it now -
They've built a monstrous hotel,
Built it on the very brow."
"Tis thus these noble carriers,
As on the streets they whirl
Upon their daily mission,
Give the news of all the world.
IX.
O, New's carrier! New's carrier!
Her's a heart for you, dears,
Her's a word that may bless you
"Mid your troubles and your tears.
Ah, News' carrier, News' Carrier,
How often through the sleet,
Thou has brought me my paper
And a welcome thou dost meet.
X.
The old Year has faded
With its shadows, dark'ning dim,
While the New Year is singing,
Will you list'n unto him?
Ah, long may the halloo
Of you dear carrier's call,
Bring smiles to our hearthstones-
Bring the NEWS to us all!
-W.C. Haffley."
