Description

Postcard depicting guests enjoying the swimming pool of the Signal Mountain Inn. The card is titled "Swimming Pool, Signal Mountain Hotel, Chattanooga, Tenn.-13" The read advertisement reads "SWIMMING POOL—The water is absolutely clean and pure, being filtered and sterilized by the latest sanitary process, and is continuously changing. Sanitary regulations are made and strictly enforced. The main pool is eighty feet along by thirty feet wide, and varies in depth from three and one-half to eight feet. In addition, we have a wading pool for the kiddies, where they may play in absolute safety. " In 1911, Chattanooga businessman C. E. James bought 4,400 acres of land near Signal Point on Walden’s Ridge with a vision of building a grand resort to rival any other in the region. Construction of the Signal Mountain Inn began later that year in conjunction with a rail line that would ferry guests from downtown Chattanooga to the hotel's doorstep. Designed by the architectural firm Adams & Alsup, the building was made of pink sandstone up to the second story with stucco above and capped by a red tile roof. Promoted as a place to enjoy “cool, healthful air and fine water,” it offered guests many amenities to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, including a golf course, horseback riding, and nearby Rainbow Lake for swimming and boating. The inn was later purchased by the Alexian Brothers, a Catholic Order dedicated to caring for the sick, and repurposed as a retirement home now operating as Alexian Village of Tennessee.
