LINDSEY FOREIGN FRUITS AND HOME-MADE CANDIES MARKET STREET, CHATTANOOGA, TENN."
On the verso, an advertisement for Brown's Iron Bitters has been pasted on. The advert has a blonde female with a rose in her hair and a pearl necklace. The text around her reads "THE BEST TONIC BROWN'S IRON BITTERS."
*Ethnic stereotypes, which originated as a popular form of advertising in the US in the 19th & 20th Centuries, were based on stereotypical and racists portrayals of Asian Americans. These stereotypes grew out of the "yellow peril" a color-metaphor that represents the peoples of East Asia as an existential danger. This included "yellow" face, mocking speech, satirical lyrics, etc all with the intent to portray Asian Americans as intrinsically different and perpetual foreigners unable to assimilate into 'Western society' regardless of citizenship or duration of residence. Objects depicting racist and/or stereotypical imagery or language may be offensive and disturbing, but it is the aim of Picnooga to include them in the Collection in order to present and preserve the historical context in which they were created and used. Objects of this type provide an important historical record from which to study and evaluate racism.Collection
