A postcard with the front showing a color-tinted photograph of Holly Street, part of the Ferger Place neighborhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The gates feature two sets of large stone columns with terracotta shingled grooves and cast iron gates blocking the main road in.
Ferger Place was established in 1910 as the first exclusively "White-Only" gated community in the South by two brothers, J. Fred Ferger and J. Herman Ferber. The deeds for the original houses were restricted by race (and are available at the Hamilton County Register of Deeds office), saying "That none of said real estate ... shall at any time within ninety-nine years from the date of this deed, be sold, transferred, conveyed, leased, or rented … to any negro or person of color."
