Description

A postcard with the front showing a color-tinted photograph of Hickory Street in the Ferger Place neighborhood of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The postcard shows the street looking towards the gate with houses on either side and children on the sidewalk. Ferger Place was established in 1910 as the first exclusively "White-Only" gated community in the South by two brothers, J. Fred Ferger and J. Herman Ferber. The deeds for the original houses were restricted by race (and are available at the Hamilton County Register of Deeds office), saying "That none of said real estate ... shall at any time within ninety-nine years from the date of this deed, be sold, transferred, conveyed, leased, or rented … to any negro or person of color." ------- CONTENT WARNING Materials in the Picnooga/Chattanooga Historical Society's collections contain historical terms, phrases, and images that may be distressing and are offensive to modern readers, such as materials that document violence or hate speech. These include demeaning and dehumanizing references to race, ethnicity, and nationality; enslaved or free status; physical and mental ability; and gender and sexual orientation. When making these materials available online through the Digital Library, Picnooga endeavors to place content warnings to allow users to decide when and how to engage with the items.
