A black and white photograph mounted on a cabinet card showing famed French actress Sarah Bernhardt. She is photographed at Garrity's Alabama Battery atop Lookout Mountain, Tennessee in 1911. The actress is wearing a dark skirt and white shirtwaist with a dark coat left unbuttoned. A dark scarf is wrapped around her neck with a brimless hat with flowers on the top. Her hand is placed on the barrel of a cannon.
There is dry adhesive residue below the photograph on the card where a label was removed at some point prior to acquisition. The rear of the photograph features black ink that reads "Sarah Bernhardt Lookout Mountain Chattanauga, Tenn 1911"
Bernhardt came to Chattanooga 14 March 1911 with her French Chef Henri, a personal train car (which she preferred over American hotels), a retinue of aids, her dog (Peter Pan), and 65 trunks for an engagement at the Bijou.Photograph Details
