A Receipt from Miller Brothers Company for purchasing a raincoat and nearly 40 yards of fabric, dating to 1929.
Company billhead.
In 1889, the brothers Frank M. and Gustave H. (Gus) Miller set up the New York Racket Store in a small storefront at 510 Market Street. Soon, they would move and expand into a larger store at 619 Market Street in Downtown Chattanooga.
After a fire destroyed the Richardson Building on the corner of Seventh, between Broad and Market Streets in 1897, the brothers purchased the lot and built a new store in its footprint. Miller’s remained a privately held company until 1973.
A new company, Miller’s Department Store, was formed on August 1, 1973, from the consolidation of retail conglomerates Garfinckel, Brooks Brothers, Miller & Rhoads, Inc.
In 1981, with its parent conglomerate’s acquisition, Miller’s became a part of Allied Stores.
In 1986, Hess acquired the chain in a hostile takeover and converted to Dillard’s in 1992.
The Downtown Chattanooga store closed in 1986.Archive Items Details
