FEET OF FLOOR SPACE UNDER ONE ROOF. In 1889, the brothers Frank M. and Gustave H. (Gus) Miller set up the New York Racket Store in a small storefront at 510 Market Street. Soon, they would move and expand into a larger store at 619 Market Street in Downtown Chattanooga. After a fire destroyed the Richardson Building on Seventh's corner, between Broad and Market Streets in 1897, the brothers purchased the lot and built a new store in its footprint. Miller’s remained a privately held company until 1973. A new company, Miller’s Department Store, was formed on August 1, 1973, from the consolidation of retail conglomerates Garfinckel, Brooks Brothers, Miller & Rhoads, Inc. In 1981, with its parent conglomerate’s acquisition, Miller’s became a part of Allied Stores. In 1986, Hess acquired the chain in a hostile takeover and converted to Dillard’s in 1992. The Downtown Chattanooga store closed in 1986.
