Scope and Content

Manilla folder with 15 black and white photographs of the Boone-Higgins Trade School, Chattanooga Campus, 201 West Tenth Street. The photographs were secured in the folder with a metal, 2 inch prong paper fastener. The outer front folder is stamped "The Boone Higgins Trade School of Tennessee, Inc., 201 West 10th Street, Chattanooga 3, Tennessee" in black ink with "D.E. Ulmer, Director" written below in blue pen. The interior tab in stamped the same as the exterior. For conservation purposes, the prong will be removed and the photographs unstapled after documentation. Boone-Higgins Enterprises operated several trade schools throughout Tennessee and Arkansas, all set up under the Educational and Training Program under the GI Bill. The purpose of the schools were to provide job training in various fields like watchmaking, Auto-Body and Fender repair.

A - Black and white silver gelatin photograph of the Boone Higgins Trade School's front office. The photograph features a a woman sitting at a desk, speaking into a black telephone at a desk. Her desk has various office items on it, including a Burrough's Adding Machine, stacks of files and folders, a basketball trophy and a rose and carnation in a vase. A man is standing behind her, looking into an open drawer of a tall filing cabinet. The photograph shows that the office has one brick wall behind them with two filing cabinets sitting along it. The side wood paneled wall is a decorated with two advertising wall calendars. B- The paper the photograph was mounted on is stamped in blue ink "The Boone Higgins Trade School of Tennessee, Inc. 201 West Tenth Street, Chattanooga 3, Tennessee" at top center with "office personnel" hand written below.

Description

Black and white photograph of the office without workers. The photographs feature two desks back to back, one cleared with the exception of a covered Allen & Wales Adding Machine and radio as well as a stapler and piled papers. The second desk has a box with a dictionary and snake plant on top. There is a ash tray and black telephone at center. A tall filing cabinet is against the brick back wall and a first aid box is mounted on the wall beside it. The rear of the photograph is stamped in purple ink "O.K. Studio, C.B. Foster, Proprietor, 421 1/2 East 9th Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee."

Description

Black and white photograph of a table with five men sitting along one side. All of the men are wearing suit jackets with a white shirt and tie. Description

Black and white photograph of a basketball game between Boone Higgins students and Lafayette. The photographs show two players jumping for the ball with the referee in the midground wearing a black and white striped uniform with khaki pants. Both teams are wearing dark jerseys but the Boone Higgins team uniform feature striped side panels. The court is in a brick building and there are benches against the far wall in the background of the photograph. Students and coaches sit on the bench watching the game.

Description

Black and white photograph of one of Boone Higgins Trade School classes, the Body and Fender Repair class. The photograph features a three rows of students, some standing and some kneeling, wearing white uniforms with "Boone Higgins Tr. School" on the back and matching white hats. The men are facing a chalkboard where an instructor is using a pointer to demonstrate to the class the information on the board as a student pours a can of Ditzler paint into a smaller container on a scale. A metal rack to the left is filled with cans of Ditzler paints. The chalkboard reads "Glade Green" with measurements below to create the color for different size needs (ie: Pint, Quart, Gallon). Two posters flanking the chalkboard advertise an upcoming March Basketball game against [?].M. College and one for the April Fool Dance.

Description

Black and white photograph of the Boone Higgins Paint Shop. At center, a large barrel with a spigot at the right sits on wooden sawhorses against the back wall. Paint can be seen on wood panels mounted on the rear wall. Paint cans, metal jerry cans, and other supply equipment are on the ground, lining the back wall. Paint spray equipment is mounted on the left wall and gas tanks can be seen the the foreground, right. The 8X10 photograph is stamped on the rear in purple ink ""O.K. Studio, C.B. Description

Black and white photograph showing Boone Higgins students and instructors looking over a newly painted car. A dark car is parked at center, surrounded by students in white Boone Higgins jumpsuits or coveralls as well as men in casual attire. 2022.024.010 Paint Shop Demonstration

Description

Black and white photograph of a paint demonstration at the Boone Higgins Trade School. The photograph features a large group of students sitting or standing around a table at center where two men demonstrate with a paint gun sprayer and Permax paint and paint thinners. Several cans of Permax paint are on the wooden table at center. A large chalkboard with cursive sits at center, rear behind the men. A sedan can be seen at right behind the group while an automobile prepped for paint with newspaper covering the chrome is in the foreground. A post to the right of the photograph has two signs mounted, one Southern Bell sign indicating a public telephone and another that reads "Keep Out, For Business Apply at Office, D.M. Ulmer."

Description

Black and white photograph of three cars in various state of repair in the Boone Higgins shop. There are two automobiles parked at center with the one on the left sitting on the wheel studs with tools sitting on the top. The car on the right, also on its studs, has a license plate reading 4-16214, 1947 Tenn. Several tools are laid out on the floor at center with a creeper and some sort of shop dolly. A wood framed window is at right with a sign above it advertising for students to "Reinstate your GI Insurance". The rear is stamped in purple ink "O.K. Studio, C.B. Foster, Proprietor, 421 1/2 East 9th Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee."

A - Black and white photograph of the Tailoring Class at Boone Higgins Trade School. The photograph features two rows of students sitting in front of desks with an arm lamp and sewing machine mounted on it. The students in the front row both have fabric on the desk in front of them. Twelve students sit at desks while a man stands at center assisting a student. Electrical cords can be seen hanging down from the ceiling. Three brooms are propped in the left corner. Description

A- Black and white photograph of seven men learning to repair shoes. A short wall runs from bottom, center to the left and has metal shoe forms in various sizes on top. One man, center, is using a shoe mold to work on a woman's high heel. A man to his right is using a grinder on the sole of a shoe. A coat rack is mounted on the wall to the right with coats and hats hanging off of it. There is a poster advertising Biltrite above the coatrack (they made rubber shoe heels at the time) as well as another poster portraying "Shoes Through the Ages" on the back wall.
