Description

A black and white photograph developed onto postcard paper showing a crowd in cars and on horseback on the Parade Grounds at Fort Oglethorpe. The image shows three automobiles in the foreground with the Vice-President of Cuba, Dr. Alfredo Zayas in the far car (he is marked with a pen mark by his head by the sender of the postcard). There are two men on horseback beside his car, identified in the Chattanooga Daily Times as Col. Parker, the commanding officer at Fort Oglethorpe. The flag pole as well as two officer's quarter buildings can be seen in the background. Vice-President Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso arrived in Chattanooga on Friday, 11 February 1910 to discuss trade with the country as well as a possible Cuban embassy in the city. They visited Fort Oglethorpe in the afternoon and were treated to a review of the 11th Cavalry on the parade grounds. A reception at the Patten Hotel followed his visit and Dr. Zayas left for New York City the next day. The visit was arranged in part by the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce and the Merchants Association.
