Description

A halftone printed postcard showing the Dr. J.C. Tadley Building. The postcard shows a three-story brick building with decorative scuppers at the parapet and three bays on the first floor where various businesses. Other businesses and offices occupied the second floors and a dance hall was on the third. In 1928 when the office building opened, these businesses included Jimmie Edwards' Tailor Shop, Melody Music Shop (D.E. Lewis, prop), Dentist Dr. J. Monroe Bynes, and the Silver Slipper Garden. The dance hall was managed by Glenn Hawkins and was opened twice a week with performances by Duconge's Silver Tone Orchestra. A inset image in an oval frame shows the interior of the dance hall, lined with chairs. On the verso, the postcard reads "The new Tadley Office Building, located at the corner of Ninth and Douglas Streets, was erected in 1928 with Roof Garden Dance Hall, popularly known as "The Home of Good Dancing," accommodating more than 800 people." The dividing line has the Tichnor Brothers logo at the top, with "Tichnor Quality Views" below. On the top right, the postcard is numbered 132831 with a decorative font reading "Post Card". The stamp box reads "Place | Stamp Here | Domestic | One Cent | Foreign | Two Cents" An advertisement in the Chattanooga Times when the Tadley Building opened shows the many people who contributed to the construction: Stiver's Lumber - Millwork and lumber Varnell Hardware Co -builder's hardware Chattanooga Floor Laying Sales Co. - flooring Robert McKarn - plumbing Williams Glass Co - plate glass windows J.Y.
