Description

A postcard with the front showing a photograph of the Hamilton County Court House and Fountain Square in Chattanooga, Tennessee. To the left is Fireman's Fountain, a memorial to firemen Henry Iler and W.M. Peak, who lost their lives in the line of duty battling the Beehive fire, June 9, 1887. The Chattanooga Times raised funds to erect the fountain in 1888 to honor the two men. Both men died after a wall collapsed during a fire in a firm that stored gas. The exploding gas caused a brick wall to fall on the two men. Iler was killed instantly and while Peak was pulled out by the Fire Cheif, he died three days later.
