Scope and Content

Collection of seven souvenir Chickamauga National Celebration Wooden Nickels. Each "nickel" is made of balsa wood and imprinted in different colors. The seven are a part of a set that were created as souvenirs for the Chickamauga National Celebration at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia that celebrated the hundred year anniversary of the start of the Civil War. The rear of each wooden nickel reads "This Wooden Certificate, issued by the National Chickamauga Celebration Commission in commemoration of the Battle of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, the History and Character of the Cherokee Indian, and the Centennial of Chattanooga, is redeemable at the face value stamped thereon in United States coin at Celebration Headquarters, Chattanooga, Tennessee, up to Monday noon, September 19, 1938." There is an image of Lookout Mountain in a circle to the left with a female drummer ("Drums of Dixie") to the right. Each wooden nickel features a star border with 5's at every corner.
