Description

Image from a glass plate negative. The image shows one man, identified as Fred Phillips, Jr., and two women inside of a canvas tent. The two women are wearing high-necked blouses with long skirts and hats with netting and feathers. They are perched on a camp bed, facing the man, with one writing on a note pad. The man is seated on a wooden camp chair, holding an edition of The Chattanooga News. The headline of the paper, partially obscured, reads "Regiments Mustered Out". The man is wearing a uniform with a Third Infantry, United States Volunteer insignia on his collar. He's wearing a saber at his side with one stripe down his trouser legs. A wooden desk can be seen behind the man, with a chart cabinet on top as well as rolled papers and books. A bugle with cord sits on the desk. The photograph is likely taken at Camp Thomas, Fort Oglethorpe, GA during the Spanish American War. The Third U.S. Volunteer Infantry was established in 1898 and mustered in Georgia to serve as an occupation force in Cuba.
