A gelatin-silver printed postcard with the front showing a photograph of a group posing in front of the Illinois Monument on Missionary Ridge. The couple sitting in a horse-drawn buggy are identified on the reverse as Judd and Lina Ledford.
Located on the Bragg Reservation atop Missionary Ridge, the Illinois Monument marks the scene of intense fighting during the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Designed by Robert A. Ballard, the 80-ft. white marble monument features four bronze statues at the base, representing a branch of the military. Grasping an olive branch in one hand and an olive wreath in the other, an allegorical sculpture of “Peace” stands atop the monument. Norwegian sculptor Sigvald Asbjorn crafted the bronze soldiers and “Peace” statue.Subject Place
